Minnesota Mesothelioma
The Minnesota Department of Health has a study to determine whether taconite fibers and dust can cause lung conditions like mesothelioma and asbestosis from asbestos exposure. Iron ore miners are being diagnosed with mesothelioma lung cancer at a rate much higher than is to be expected in the general population. Asbestos was common in taconite mining so taconite fibers may be involved. A 2003 study of taconite miners said the most likely cause of 14 cases of mesothelioma was from asbestos. Mesothelioma occurs at twice the expected rate in the Minnesota Iron Range.
